Inleiding
Fabriekspand, 1905, gesitueerd op de hoek van Bassin en Boschstraat, gebouwd als WERKPLAATS van de N.V. Sphinx. Het gebouw wordt aan de zuidzijde begrensd door het Bassin, aan de westzijde door de Boschstraat, aan de noordzijde door de tot woning verbouwde remise van de Maastrichtse Omnibusmaatschappij. Aan de oostzijde, tussen de achtergevel van de werkplaats en de elektriciteitscentrale, werd naderhand een materialenmagazijn gebouwd. Dit magazijn is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
De Sphinx-werkplaats is een bouwvolume van een, respectievelijk twee bouwlagen op een rechthoekige plattegrond die ten opzichte van de Boschstraat in lengterichting is gesitueerd. Het kleine zuidelijke volume telt een bouwlaag en wordt gedekt door een plat dak. De eigenlijke werkplaats kenmerkt zich door een langgerekte kopgevel over twee lagen, waarachter dwarsgeplaatste sheddakconstructie met pannen, zink en glas.
De werkplaats heeft een symmetrische voorgevel. In de eerste laag een centraal geplaatste, segmentboogvormige, dubbele houten inrijpoort, aan weerszijden geflankeerd door een zestal vensterassen. In elke as tweegewijs gekoppelde stalen segmentboogvensters met kleine roedeverdeling, verdiept in een segmentboogvormige lijst. Verticale gevelgeleding door veertien lisenen, bekroond door een eenvoudig baksteenkapiteel met ruitornament. Tussen de bouwlagen een profiellijst met muizetanddecoratie. In de blinde tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich grote blinde imitatie-vensterlijsten muurvlak en een kroonlijst met muizetanddecoratie.
De uitbreiding aan de zuidzijde heeft aan de Boschstraatzijde een symmetrische gevel met drie traveeen, een centraal geplaatste deur met bovenlicht, acht lisenen en een horizontale muizetandlijst. De gevel aan de zuidzijde, langs de hellingbaan naar het Bassin, is eveneens ingedeeld met behulp van baksteenlisenen. Stalen vensters, veelal van recente datum, in segmentbooglijsten met bakstenen vulstukken.
De entreepartijen van werkplaats en zuidvolume waren in het oorspronkelijke ontwerp voorzien van een frontonbekroning met pinakels en het opschrift "1834 P.R. 1905".
Het geheel heeft een geprofileerde gepleisterde plint, een rode bakstenen optrek, hardstenen dorpels of dorpellijsten. Diverse horizontale geledingen in pleisterwerk. Gesneden voegen.
De vormgeving van de bakstenen achtergevel is aangepast aan de getande lijn van de sheddakconstructie. Ook deze gevel wordt geleed door baksteenlisenen, horizontale gevellijsten en een kroonlijst. Muizetanddecoraties. Segmentboogvormige stalen vensters, dubbele houten poorten.
Waardering
De voormalige werkplaats is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de bouwstijl, het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Het pand behoort ten dele tot het reeds beschermde stadsgezicht, is vanwege de situering verbonden zijn met de industriele ontwikkeling van Maastricht, is van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad en heeft een sterke historisch-ruimtelijke relatie bestaat met omringende wateren en wegen. De fabriekshallen beschikken over een redelijke architectonische gaafheid en zijn van belang in relatie tot de structurele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. Introduction
Factory building, 1905, situated at the corner of Bassin and Boschstraat, built as WORKSHOP of the N.V. Sphinx. The building is bounded on the south side by the Bassin, on the west side by Boschstraat, on the north side by the remise of the Maastrichtse Omnibusmaatschappij converted into a dwelling. On the east side, between the rear facade of the workshop and the electricity plant, a materials store was subsequently built. This store is excluded from protection.
Description
The Sphinx workshop is a building volume of one and two storeys respectively on a rectangular floor plan positioned lengthwise with respect to Boschstraat. The small southern volume comprises one storey and is covered by a flat roof. The actual workshop is characterised by a long copy gable spanning two storeys, behind which is a transversely positioned shed roof structure with tiles, zinc and glass.
The workshop has a symmetrical front facade. In the first storey a centrally positioned, segmental arch-shaped, double wooden carriage door, flanked on either side by six window bays. In each bay two coupled steel segmental arch windows with small glazing bars, recessed in a segmental arch moulding. Vertical facade articulation through fourteen pilasters, crowned by a simple brick capital with diamond ornament. Between the storeys a moulding with dog-tooth decoration. In the blind second storey there are large blind imitation window mouldings on the wall surface and a cornice with dog-tooth decoration.
The extension on the south side has a symmetrical facade facing Boschstraat with three bays, a centrally positioned door with fanlight, eight pilasters and a horizontal dog-tooth moulding. The facade on the south side, along the slope towards the Bassin, is likewise articulated with the help of brick pilasters. Steel windows, mostly of recent date, in segmental arch mouldings with brick fill pieces.
The entrance sections of the workshop and southern volume were provided in the original design with a pediment crown with pinnacles and the inscription "1834 P.R. 1905".
The whole has a profiled plastered plinth, a red brick structure, hardstone sills or sill mouldings. Various horizontal articulations in plasterwork. Tooled joints.
