Inleiding
WERKPLAATS in utilitaire hoogbouw van de sanitairfabriek NV Koninklijke Sphinx, 1930-1940, dominant gesitueerd aan Boschstraat en Bassin. Het fabrieksgebouw is in drie stadia tot stand gekomen (1930, 1932 en 1940) en daarbij steeds in noordelijke richting uitgebreid. Aannemer Van den Hof te Maastricht was verantwoordelijk voor de realisatie van het geheel.
Omschrijving
De werkplaats heeft een souterrain en acht verdiepingen op een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het geheel bevindt zich in lengterichting ten opzichte van de Boschstraat en wordt gedekt door een plat dak met een drietal opbouwen. In de grote middenopbouw bevindt zich een waterreservoir, in de twee kleinere opbouwen liftschachten.
Het zuidelijke en middenvolume hebben een skeletconstructie van gewapend beton (inclusief vloerplaten, paddestoelkolommen en betonbalken), het noordelijke volume een staalconstructie. De buitengevelvelden zijn ingevuld met cementsteen. Het geheel is witgesausd. De voor- en achtergevel zijn sterk horizontaal georienteerd door de achtendertig vensterassen. De zijgevels aan de noordzijde tellen elk drie vensterassen en zijn om die reden sterk verticaal geaccentueerd. Rechthoekige stalen vensterkozijnen met vijftien- en vierentachtigruits roedeverdeling, rechthoekige stalen deuren.
In het interieur zijn met name de paddestoelkolommen van belang.
Waardering
De werkplaats in hoogbouw van de NV Koninklijke Sphinx is van cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische, technische en typologische ontwikkeling met een innovatieve waarde. Het gebouw is uit bouwtechnisch oogpunt, vanwege het materiaalgebruik en de constructieve relatie tussen exterieur en interieur van architectuurhistorisch belang.
Daarnaast is er sprake van ensemble-waarden vanwege de situering, vanwege het belang voor het aanzien van de stad en vanwege de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met de binnenhaven c.q. de omringende industriële bebouwing. De fabriek beschikt over een aanzienlijke mate van architectonische gaafheid en is van waarde in relatie tot de visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. Het pand heeft bovendien een grote bouwtechnische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheidswaarde.

WORKSHOP in utilitarian high-rise construction of the sanitary ware factory NV Koninklijke Sphinx, 1930-1940, dominantly situated at Boschstraat and Bassin. The factory building came into being in three stages (1930, 1932 and 1940) and was thereby continually extended in a northern direction. Contractor Van den Hof of Maastricht was responsible for the realisation of the whole.
Description
The workshop has a basement and eight storeys on a rectangular floor plan. The whole is positioned lengthwise with respect to Boschstraat and is covered by a flat roof with three superstructures. In the large central superstructure there is a water reservoir, in the two smaller superstructures lift shafts.
The southern and middle volume have a skeleton construction of reinforced concrete (including floor slabs, mushroom columns and concrete beams), the northern volume a steel construction. The exterior facade panels are filled with cement stone. The whole is whitewashed. The front and rear facades are strongly horizontally oriented by the thirty-eight window bays. The side facades on the north side each have three window bays and are for that reason strongly vertically accentuated. Rectangular steel window frames with fifteen- and forty-eight-pane glazing bars, rectangular steel doors.
In the interior the mushroom columns are particularly important.
Valuation
The workshop in high-rise construction of the NV Koninklijke Sphinx is of cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a social-economic, technical and typological development with innovative value. The building is of architectural-historical importance from a construction-technical viewpoint, by virtue of the use of materials and the constructive relationship between exterior and interior.
Moreover there are ensemble values by virtue of the location, by virtue of the importance for the appearance of the city and by virtue of the historical-spatial relationship with the inner harbour respectively the surrounding industrial buildings. The factory has a considerable degree of architectural integrity and is of value in relation to the visual integrity of the urban environment. The building moreover has a great construction-technical, typological and functional rarity value.
