Inleiding
PAKHUIS, genaamd het Maastrichts Veem, gesitueerd aan de thans gesloten zuidelijke bebouwingswand langs de binnenhaven van de Zuid-Willemsvaart uit 1826, tevens beginpunt van het inmiddels gedempte kanaal Maastricht-Luik. Omstreeks 1860 opgetrokken in een traditioneel-ambachtelijke, neo-Romaans beïnvloede stijl.
In 1980-1981 verbouwing tot appartementencomplex door de Woningvereniging St.Mathias. Het interieur is volledig aan de nieuwe bestemming aangepast.
Omschrijving
Pakhuis met vijf bouwlagen, plus souterrain- en zolderverdieping op een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het geheel wordt gedekt door een tussen kopgevels verzonken zadeldak.
Grijze oud-Hollands vernieuwde pannen, nokschoorstenen. Vier dakkapellen en een centraal geplaatst hijsluik op elk dakvlak.
Het Veemgebouw heeft aan de Bassinzijde een symmetrische lijstgevel met een verticale geleding. De vijf vensterreeksen worden gescheiden door zes lisenen waarin de balkankers zijn aangebracht. De lisenen lopen uit in grote boogvelden.
Bakstenen optrek gemetseld in kruisverband. In de eerste bouwlaag een hardstenen plint, hardstenen venster- en deuromlijstingen en gevelstenen met het opschrift "GebrS" en "1860". In de overige bouwlagen hardstenen dorpels, hardstenen middenzuiltjes en hardstenen aanzetstenen in de boogvelden.
Rechthoekige stalen vensters en deuren in de eerste bouwlaag.
Gekoppelde stalen rondboogvensters met kleine roedeverdeling, gevat in segmentboogvormige lijsten met strek in de overige bouwlagen. Op de zolderverdieping halfronde stalen vensters met roedeverdeling in stralenkransvorm. In de as onder de hijsinstallatie bevinden zich vanaf de tweede bouwlaag segmentboogvormige dubbele stalen luiken.
De achtergevel heeft dezelfde indeling als de voorgevel, maar ontbeert de profilering door lisenen en boogvelden. In deze vlakke achtergevel zijn uitsluitend rondboogvormige stalen venster- en deurkozijnen met een karakteristieke roedeverdeling aangebracht.
Waardering
Het Maastrichtse Veemgebouw is als industriëel-archeologisch object en als specimen van vroeg-industriële hoogbouw van grote cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde.
