The register's description

Inleiding

Opgetrokken in wit gesausde baksteen in kruisverband.

Introduction

BLEACHERY with warehouse of the paper factory Lhoëst & Weustenraad, built between 1859 and 1861. The building belongs to the oldest industrial construction around the basin of the Zuid-Willemsvaart and is the foundation of the KNP that has developed since the middle of the nineteenth century. The bleachery building, originally provided with a gabled roof, was heightened in 1950 by one storey under a flat roof.

Description

Bleachery building with basement, four storeys plus superstructure under flat roof on an L-shaped floor plan. Constructed in whitewashed brick in Flemish bond.

Regular facade articulation over four storeys, featuring segmental-arched windows with glazing bars. On the south side there is a projecting cross gable. The south facade of this transverse building has two window bays over three storeys and a semicircular window in the fourth storey. In the east wing of the main building there are fourteen window bays over three storeys and six large horizontal windows in the added storey. The large wall anchors are prominently present on the facade. The west wing is built on the slope that originally led to the fortification wall, traces of which are visible in the facade.

Facade stone with building date indication 1859-1861.

In the interior, notably important are the cast-iron column constructions and vaulted brick floors, belonging to a so-called fireproof construction; the largely complete installation of four effileurs from the firm Thiry in Huy, used for washing and processing rags; the sieve drums are missing; so-called "Hollander" for wet processing of rags from the firm E.Lamort et Fils in Vitry-sur-Marne (France), of which the associated electric motor is missing; four steel rag chutes, two of which from 1948; calender for satinizing paper; AEG electric motor from 1910 in the collery cellar.

Valuation

The bleachery with warehouse is of cultural-historical significance as a very distinctive expression of a socio-economic, technical and typological development and of great importance because of its innovative character. The architectural-historical value lies principally in the building technique. The bleachery is of very special significance for the appearance of the city, is by virtue of its location on the former fortification walls connected with the expansion and development of the city and has a historical-spatial relationship with the industrial construction around the harbour basin. The bleachery has moderate architectural integrity of the exterior, but at the same time has a number of very valuable interior components and a high building-technical, typological and functional rarity that is strongly connected with the age of this industrial-archaeological relic.
