The register's description

Inleiding.

Gaaf.

Introduction.

Bascule bridge (Amsterdam type) over the Hoogeveensche Vaart built in 1929 by construction and contracting firm Gebr. Tellegen from Daarlerveen (near Vroomshoop) and on commission of the municipality of Meppel. The bridge is referred to as Sluisbrug on account of its situation and relationship with the likewise worthy-of-protection sluice. Description. Bridge intended for ordinary traffic with a central section for cars (3.50 m) with on either side footpaths (0.75 m). Clear height of 5.60 m and an opening between the landheads partly executed in reinforced concrete of 6.00 m. Cast and wrought iron railings on the embankment and the landheads. The bridge is entirely riveted and consists of two independently standing hammer piers (rounded at the top), built up from four corner irons that form frameworks with cross-couplings, the three lower panels of which are clad with plates. The hammer piers are widened towards the bottom and have an additional corner iron on the outside. The balance beams and cross-members are framework with an N-pattern; I-profile with concealed balance box; diagonal tension rods. The suspension rods are each composed of two strips. The bridge is moved by hand with the aid of a straight lever bar that moves along the inside of the western hammer pier.

Assessment.

Bridge of cultural-historical importance because of the functional development of Meppel as a port city. Of architectural-historical and industrial-archaeological importance because of the typology, design and use of materials. Of urban planning importance because of its image-defining significance in relation to the (worthy-of-protection) sluice and the harbour. Such bridges are gradually becoming unique. Intact.
