Inleiding VILLA, vrijstaand gesitueerd aan de zuidzijde van de Ubbo Emmiussingel, in 1881 als één van de eerste bouwwerken gebouwd in het gebied van de geslechte wallen in opdracht van bankier Jhr. Mr. Rhijnvis Feith naar ontwerp van de uit Oldenburg (Dld.) afkomstige architect G. Schnitger in een karakteristieke eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als kantoor en daartoe inwendig aangepast. De tuin om de villa is grotendeels als parkeergelegenheid ingericht en het smeedijzeren hek is vervangen door een voethoog muurtje. Omschrijving De geheel gepleisterde villa is opgetrokken op een in hoofdvorm vierkante plattegrond en bestaat uit een souterrain met twee bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, gedekt met leien in Rijndekking, voorzien van kajuiten en kapellen. De vierkante plattegrond is afgewisseld met enkele risalieten, uitbouwen en een afschuining op de noordwesthoek. De ingangspartij in het midden van de voorgevel heeft zowel ruimtelijke als decoratieve nadruk gekregen. Voor het souterrain leidt een trappenvlucht met balusterleuningen naar de rondboogvormig gesloten ingang. Boven de ingang bevindt zich een ondiep balkon dat gedragen wordt door forse Toscaanse zuilen. Het ingangsrisaliet van drie traveeën breed ontving op de verdieping een pilasterstelling rond de vensters. Tegen de kap is een van obelisken, rolwerkvoluten en ballen voorziene kapel gebouwd. Aan weerszijden van dit risaliet bevinden zich brede raamtraveeën met vensters die op de verdieping van recht getrokken lijstwerk zijn voorzien en op de begane grond van zware, gebosseerde negblokken. Het pleisterwerk op de verdieping is vrij vlak en van schijnvoegen voorzien; op de begane grond is het pleisterwerk voorzien van een grote reeks forse horizontale banden. De oostelijke zijvleugel kreeg nagenoeg dezelfde uitdossing. De risalerende partij zit hier op het zuiden waar een met rondboogvensters geopende serre met balkon aansluit. De westelijke zijgevel laat een eenvoudiger vormgeving zien. Het gebouw richt zich met de voorgevel en ingang op de Ubbo Emmiussingel, maar in de uitdossing van de gevels tevens op het nabijgelegen Hereplein. De hoek naar die zijde is afgeschuind en op de begane grond van een erker en op de verdieping van een balkon voorzien. De vensters zijn gevat in pilasterstellingen. Waardering Geheel vrijstaande villa, vormgegeven in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl kenmerkend voor de architectuur van het einde van de negentiende eeuw, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de zeldzame schoonheid die zich manifesteert in zowel de robuuste proporties en fraaie verhoudingen als in de sterke plasticiteit, ontstaan door geledingen en decoraties. VILLA, situated detached on the south side of the Ubbo Emmiussingel, built in 1881 as one of the first structures in the area of the demolished walls on behalf of banker Jhr. Mr. Rhijnvis Feith according to the design of architect G. Schnitger from Oldenburg (Germany) in a characteristic eclectic architectural style. The building is currently in use as an office and has been internally adapted for this purpose. Description
The entirely plastered villa is erected on an essentially square floor plan and consists of a basement with two storeys under a truncated hipped roof, covered with slate in German bond, provided with roof cabins and roof chapels. The square floor plan is varied with some projecting sections, extensions and a canted corner on the north-west. The entrance section in the centre of the front facade has received both spatial and decorative emphasis. In front of the basement, a flight of stairs with balustrades leads to the semicircular entrance. Above the entrance is a shallow balcony supported by substantial Tuscan columns. The entrance risalite of three bays wide received on the first floor a pilaster arrangement around the windows. Against the roof a chapel was built, furnished with obelisks, scrollwork volutes and balls. On either side of this risalite are broad window bays with windows that on the first floor are provided with straight-lined surround and on the ground floor with heavy, rusticated tooled blocks. The plasterwork on the first floor is relatively flat and provided with false joints; on the ground floor the plasterwork is provided with a large series of substantial horizontal bands. The eastern wing received nearly the same treatment. The projecting section is located here on the south where a conservatory opened with semicircular windows and a balcony adjoins. The western side facade shows simpler treatment. The building faces with its front facade and entrance towards the Ubbo Emmiussingel, but in the treatment of the facades also towards the nearby Hereplein. The corner towards that side is canted and provided on the ground floor with a bay window and on the first floor with a balcony. The windows are set in pilaster arrangements.
