Inleiding HERENHUIS, gesitueerd in de nagenoeg gesloten, noordelijke gevelwand van de Ubbo Emmiussingel, gebouwd in 1884 in opdracht van J.D. van Houten in een neo-classicistische bouwstijl. Het gebouw grenst aan de westzijde aan een smalle steeg. Het voorerf wordt omzoomd door een smeedijzeren hekwerk. Het gebouw is sinds 1951 in gebruik geweest als kantoor en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als praktijk. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een diepe, rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met een zwarte verbeterde Hollandse pan. De voorgevel is vier traveeën breed. De voorgevel is geheel gepleisterd met een keur aan decoratieve verrijkingen. Op de begane grond bevat de gevel een rustica bekleding in grote blokken tot de hoogte van de wisseldorpel. Ter hoogte hiervan zijn de bosseringen afgesloten met lijstkapitelen met een bloemenlijstje. De vensters zijn segmentboogvormig gesloten en voorzien van geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk met kuiven van loofwerk. De borstweringen onder de vensters zijn voorzien van grote diamantkoppen. De twee oostelijke traveeën bevatten deuren (waarvan de buitenste modern is). Op de hoeken zijn in fors reliëf blokken als gevelafsluiting aangebracht die over de twee verdiepingen doorlopen. Een kroonlijst die de overgang van begane grond naar verdieping aangeeft, wordt gedragen door drie consoles. De vensters van de eerste verdieping zijn met rondbogen gesloten en zijn voorzien van borstweringen; de buitenste in de vorm van panelen, de middelste twee met balusters. Alle vensters zijn omlijst door pilasters en geprofileerd lijstwerk met sluitstenen in de vorm van vrouwenkoppen. Het iets risalerende middengedeelte is geaccentueerd met tegen de muurdammen geplaatste pilasters, die eveneens een kroonlijst dragen. De tweede verdieping bevat segmentboogvormig gesloten vensters en eenvoudig lijstwerk met sluitstenen. De pilasters zijn voorzien van schijnvoegen. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een kroonlijst met panelen en tandlijst, die een geprofileerde bakgoot dragen. Introduction TOWNHOUSE, situated in the almost closed, northern facade of the Ubbo Emmiussingel, built in 1884 on behalf of J.D. van Houten in a neo-classical architectural style. The building adjoins on the west side a narrow alley. The front forecourt is bordered by wrought iron fencing. The building has been in use since 1951 as an office and was internally adapted for that purpose. The building is currently in use as a practice. Description The building is constructed on a deep, rectangular ground plan and consists of three storeys under a truncated hipped roof, covered with black improved Dutch tile. The front facade is four bays wide. The front facade is completely plastered with an array of decorative enrichments. On the ground floor the facade contains a rusticated facing in large blocks to the height of the transition course. At this height the rustication is closed off with list capitals with a small flower list. The windows are closed with segmental arches and provided with moulded stucco list work with acanthus scrolls. The parapets beneath the windows are provided with large diamond heads. The two eastern bays contain doors (the outermost of which is modern). On the corners large blocks in strong relief are placed as facade closure which run over the two storeys. A cornice marking the transition from ground floor to storey is carried by three consoles. The windows of the first storey are closed with round arches and are provided with parapets; the outermost in the form of panels, the middle two with balusters. All windows are framed by pilasters and moulded list work with keystones in the form of female heads. The slightly projecting middle section is accentuated with pilasters placed against the wall piers, which likewise carry a cornice. The second storey contains windows closed with segmental arches and simple list work with keystones. The pilasters are provided with false joints. The facade is closed off by a cornice with panels and dentil moulding, which carries a moulded roof gutter. Internally still of importance the ornamented stucco ceilings on the storeys and the hall with stucco decorations and wooden staircase with worked balusters. Evaluation TOWNHOUSE, abundantly designed in a neo-classical architectural style expressed in the fine composition and decoration of the exterior, of general importance from an urban-planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as an intact component of the high-value urban-planning structure of the ring-canal row on the south side of the inner city of Groningen.
