Inleiding DUBBELE VILLA, vrijstaand gesitueerd in het zuidwestelijke kwadrant van het Hereplein, gebouwd in 1882 als een van de eerste bouwwerken op de terreinen van de voormalige vestingwerken aan de zuidkant van de binnenstad in opdracht van Prof. W.M.A. Sänger in een voor het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw karakteristieke eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is sinds 1939 in gebruik als kantoor en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Omschrijving Het gebouw is op het zuiden georiënteerd en opgetrokken op een in hoofdvorm rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met schubleien in maasdekking. Het witgesausde metselwerk is grotendeels aan het oog onttrokken door pleisterwerk, voorzien van diverse schijnvoegen of bosseringen. De begane grond heeft de functie van souterrain en heeft de kenmerkende gedrukte hoogte en sobere uitstraling. De bel étage heeft aan de pleinzijde een op rijk rolwerk consoles rustend balkon met balustrade. De vensters zijn rechtgesloten en voorzien van geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk met forse sluitstenen. De erkerrisaliet aan de oostzijde is geheel gestuct en voorzien van schijnvoegen. De door de erker ingesloten hoek op de derde bouwlaag heeft een terras, omzoomd door smeedijzeren hekwerk dat doorgezet wordt in een omlopende, gestucte band, die de gevels van de bel étage afsluiten. De vensters van de tweede verdieping zijn segmentboogvormig gesloten en voorzien van geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk. De gevels worden afgesloten door een omlopende gestucte kroonlijst, die voorzien is van cartouches boven de vensters. Gepaarde consoles op de buitenhoeken van het gebouw dragen de geprofileerde bakgoot. Een kajuit met tympaan bekroning aan de pleinzijde en kleine 'oeils de boeuf' op de diverse dakschilden completeren het geheel. Waardering DUBBELE VILLA, geheel vrijstaand bouwwerk bestaande uit twee zelfstandige gebruikseenheden, vormgegeven in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl, kenmerkend voor de architectuur van het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp die onder andere tot uiting komt in de robuuste proporties van de onderdelen en het zorgvuldig uitgevoerde decoratieschema van de gevels. Bovendien vormt het gebouw, deel uitmakend van de buitengewoon waardevolle bebouwing aan de zuidzijde van de Heresingel, door zijn situering aan het zuidwestelijk kwadrant van een rond-point en door zijn ligging in een zichtas over het Hereplein naar het zuiden, een zeer belangrijk element in de hoogwaardige stedebouwkundige structuur van de singelreeks langs de zuidzijde van de binnenstad van Groningen.

Introduction DOUBLE VILLA, detached situated in the southwestern quadrant of the Hereplein, built in 1882 as one of the first structures on the grounds of the former fortifications on the south side of the inner city on commission of Prof. W.M.A. Sänger in an eclectic architectural style characteristic of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The building has been in use as an office since 1939 and has been adapted internally accordingly. Description The building is oriented to the south and erected on a rectangular ground plan in its main form and has three storeys under a truncated hipped roof, covered with roofing slate in nailed covering. The whitewashed masonry is largely obscured from view by plasterwork, provided with various false joints or rustication. The ground floor has the function of a basement and has the characteristic compressed height and sober appearance. The first floor has a balcony on the square side resting on richly worked corbel consoles with balustrade. The windows are straight closed and provided with profiled stucco moulding with substantial keystones. The oriel risalit on the east side is entirely stuccoed and provided with false joints. The corner enclosed by the oriel on the third storey has a terrace, bordered by wrought-iron railwork which continues in a surrounding, stuccoed band, which finish the facades of the first floor. The windows of the second storey are closed with segment arches and provided with profiled stucco moulding. The facades are finished with a surrounding stuccoed cornice, which is provided with cartouches above the windows. Paired consoles on the outer corners of the building carry the profiled gutter. A cabin with tympanum crowning on the square side and small 'oeil de boeuf' windows on the various roof panels complete the whole. Valuation DOUBLE VILLA, a wholly detached structure consisting of two independent units of use, designed in a richly decorated, eclectic architectural style, characteristic of the architecture of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the design which are expressed, among other things, in the robust proportions of the components and the carefully executed decoration scheme of the facades. Moreover, the building, forming part of the extraordinarily valuable built environment on the south side of the Heresingel, through its situation at the southwestern quadrant of a roundabout and through its position in a sight line across the Hereplein towards the south, is a very important element in the high-quality urban planning structure of the ring of boulevards along the south side of the inner city of Groningen.
