Inleiding SCHOOLGEBOUW, vrijstaand gesitueerd op de hoek van de Rabenhauptstraat en de Achterweg, gebouwd als zes-klassige openbare lagere school in 1928-1929 in opdracht van de gemeente naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect S.J. Bouma (Gemeentewerken) in de stijl van het kubistisch expressionisme. De gebeeldhouwde sluitsteen boven de ingangspoort is van de hand van de Groningse beeldhouwer Willem Valk. Het terrein wordt afgesloten door een manshoge muur, waarin een poort is opgenomen. Sinds 1989-1990 is het gebouw in gebruik als grafisch museum en daartoe gedeeltelijk aangepast. Tijdens de renovatie is de huidige, gele kleurstelling aangebracht. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder een schilddak, dat belegd is met een rode verbeterde Hollandse pan. De baksteengevels van het gebouw zijn gesausd in een gelige tint (oorspronkelijk witgesausd), behalve de gevel van de begane grond, die is opgetrokken uit bruine, ruwe mondsteen. De westgevel heeft twee brede vensterstroken met houten kozijnen, betonnen lateien, penanten en dorpels. De bovenlichten hebben 16 ruits-roedeverdelingen. De zuidgevel heeft een aan de straatzijde omlopende vensterstrook. Tegen de westgevel is een torenachtige schoorsteen geplaatst, waarvan de enige versiering bestaat uit drie, deels uitstekende horizontale, betonnen platen. De kubische zuidgevel met het trappenhuis wordt slechts verlevendigd door uit het lood geplaatste hoekraampjes met geometrisch glas-in-lood en een asymmetrisch geplaatst venster op de verdieping. De amper zichtbare oostgevel, die via een smalle gang van de aangrenzende bebouwing wordt gescheiden, heeft regelmatig geplaatste vensterstroken met een roedeverdeling. Het schoolterrein wordt omringd door een manshoge muur van bruine mondsteen, die een volwaardig onderdeel van het ontwerp vormt en waarin aan de zuidzijde een poort met een overdekte schuilplaats is opgenomen. De poort heeft een parabolische boog met op de sluitsteen een gebeeldhouwde pelikaan en een fraai bewerkt, smeedijzeren hek. Inwendig ondermeer van belang de hal met betegeld trappenhuis en kleurige glas-in-lood vensters. Introduction SCHOOL BUILDING, standing freely situated at the corner of the Rabenhauptstraat and the Achterweg, built as a six-classroom public primary school in 1928-1929 on the commission of the municipality to the design of Groningen architect S.J. Bouma (Municipal Works) in the style of cubist expressionism. The sculptured keystone above the entrance gate is by Groningen sculptor Willem Valk. The grounds are enclosed by a man-height wall, in which a gate is incorporated. Since 1989-1990 the building has been in use as a graphic museum and has been partially adapted accordingly. During the renovation, the present yellow colour scheme was applied.
Description The building is erected on a rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys under a hipped roof, which is covered with a red improved Dutch tile. The brick facades of the building are rendered in a yellowish tint (originally white-rendered), except for the ground floor facade, which is built of brown, rough fieldstone. The west facade has two wide window bands with wooden frames, concrete lintels, pilasters and sills. The fanlights have 16-pane glazing bars. The south facade has a window band running around the street side. Against the west facade a tower-like chimney is placed, of which the only decoration consists of three, partly projecting horizontal concrete plates. The cubic south facade with the stairwell is only enlivened by deliberately off-plumb corner windows with geometric leaded glass and an asymmetrically placed window on the upper floor. The barely visible east facade, which is separated from the adjacent buildings via a narrow passage, has regularly placed window bands with glazing bars. The school grounds are surrounded by a man-height wall of brown fieldstone, which forms an integral part of the design and in which on the south side a gate with a covered shelter is incorporated. The gate has a parabolic arch with a sculptured pelican on the keystone and a finely worked wrought-iron gate. Internally notably the hall with tiled staircase and colourful leaded glass windows.
Valuation School building with associated boundary wall and gate, designed in a fine architectural style inspired by Dudok's work, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a representative of the expressionist architecture of the twenties, because of its importance for the oeuvre of architect S.J.
