Inleiding
THEEKOEPEL, vrijstaand gesitueerd ten oosten van het Herewegviaduct en ten zuiden van de spoorlijn naar Zwolle, gebouwd in 1868-1869 in opdracht van aardappelmeelfabrikant W.A. Scholten in een rijke, eclectische bouwstijl naar ontwerp van architect J. Maris. De drie gietijzeren beelden in de nissen zijn gegoten door Société de Fonderies du Val d'Oise in Parijs. Het vierde beeld, de 'Lente' voorstellend, ontbreekt. Het gietijzeren hekwerk rondom de tuin is vervaardigd door de Fa. Schretlen & Co uit Leiden. De plafondschilderingen op linnen in de salon zijn van de hand van twee Italiaanse schilders. Het gebouw is gerstaureerd in 1979 en thans in gebruik als kantoor. Het hek is gerestaureerd in 1986-1987.
Omschrijving
Het achtzijdige gebouw is opgetrokken op een ovaalvormige plattegrond en telt een souterrainverdieping en twee bouwlagen onder een koepeldak, bekleed met koper. Op de nok een verguld beeld van Mercurius, symbool van de handel. Het gebouw heeft een hardstenen basement met zwart geschilderde voegen en is opgetrokken uit roodbruine baksteen en heeft hardstenen pilasters op de hoeken. Aan de noord- en zuidzijde zijn twee halfronde veranda's uitgebouwd met balkons op de verdieping, die rusten op vierkante, gietijzeren kolommen met hiertussen gietijzeren balustrades. In elke travee op de verdieping grote rondboogvensters met geprofileerde hardstenen omlijstingen en kuiven. In de rondboognissen van de noord- en zuidgevel van de veranda drie geverfde, gietijzeren beelden van vrouwenfiguren, die de jaargetijden voorstellen. De ingang is aan de westzijde en bestaat uit een dubbele houten paneeldeur met gietijzeren rooster en hardstenen stoep. De tuin wordt begrensd door een bijpasssend gietijzeren hekwerk tussen vierkante gietijzeren balusters met goudbronskleurig geschilderde pijnappels.
Interieur
In het qua indeling en uitmonstering uitzonderlijk gaaf bewaarde interieur zijn ondermeer van belang de hal, de houten parketvloer met inlegwerk, houten lambrizeringen en plafondschilderingen op linnen met florale motieven in de salon op de eerste verdieping.

Theekoepel met een uitzonderlijk rijke eclectische architectuur, gaaf bewaard gebleven interieur en gietijzeren hekwerk uit de bouwtijd, gebouwd in opdracht van de Groninger aardappelmeelfabrikant W.A. TEA HOUSE, situated free-standing to the east of the Herewegviaduct and to the south of the railway line to Zwolle, built in 1868-1869 on behalf of potato starch manufacturer W.A. Scholten in a rich, eclectic architectural style to the design of architect J. Maris. The three cast iron sculptures in the niches were cast by Société de Fonderies du Val d'Oise in Paris. The fourth sculpture, depicting 'Spring', is missing. The cast iron fencing around the garden was manufactured by the firm Schretlen & Co from Leiden. The ceiling paintings on canvas in the salon are by the hand of two Italian painters. The building was restored in 1979 and is currently in use as an office. The fence was restored in 1986-1987.
Description
The octagonal building is constructed on an oval ground plan and comprises a basement storey and two storeys under a domed roof, covered with copper. On the ridge a gilded sculpture of Mercury, symbol of commerce. The building has a hardstone basement with black-painted joints and is built of red-brown brick and has hardstone pilasters at the corners. On the north and south sides two semicircular verandas are built out with balconies on the storey, which rest on square, cast iron columns with cast iron balustrrades between them. In each bay on the storey large round-arched windows with profiled hardstone surrounds and cornices. In the round-arched recesses of the north and south gable of the veranda three painted, cast iron sculptures of female figures, representing the seasons. The entrance is on the west side and consists of a double wooden panelled door with cast iron grille and hardstone step. The garden is bounded by a matching cast iron fence between square cast iron balusters with gold-bronze coloured painted pineapples.
Interior
In the interior, which is exceptionally well preserved as regards layout and fittings, of note are amongst other things the hall, the wooden parquet floor with inlaid work, wooden panelling and ceiling paintings on canvas with floral motifs in the salon on the first storey.
Valuation
Tea House with exceptionally rich eclectic architecture, well-preserved interior and cast iron fencing from the period of construction, built on behalf of the Groningen potato starch manufacturer W.A. Scholten to the design of architect J. Maris, of general importance for its great cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as well as for its integrity and uniqueness and the particular coherence between exterior and interior.
