Inleiding
DUBBEL HERENHUIS, vrijstaand gesitueerd ten zuiden van het zuidelijk spoorwegemplacement op een door een hekwerk omzoomd driehoekig kavel, gelegen op de kruising van de Viaductstraat en de Driehovenstraat, gebouwd in 1882 in opdracht van R. Roelfsema naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect N.W. Lit in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is in 1986 gerenoveerd en bevat thans verschillende wooneenheden. Het interieur is door verbouwingen van ondergeschikt belang.
Omschrijving
Het brede, symmetrisch opgezette gebouw is opgetrokken op een ondiepe, regelmatige plattegrond en bestaat uit een middenrisaliet van twee bouwlagen en vier traveeën breed en twee hoekrisalieten van één bouwlaag en drie traveeën breed. De drie bouwdelen zijn gedekt met afgeknotte schilddaken en belegd met een zwarte nieuwe Hollandse pan (oorspronkelijk zwarte Friese golfpan). Alle gevels zijn witgepleisterd en op de begane grond voorzien van schijnvoegen. De voorgevel van het middenrisaliet is geleed door stuc pilasters met cannelures, spiegels en composietkapitelen. Alle vensters op de begane grond zijn licht getoogd en hebben geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk met kuiven en sluitstenen. De verdiepingsvenstes zijn halfrond gesloten; de zwikken zijn versierd met stuc loofwerk en guirlandes. Voor de twee middelste vensters een schijnborstwering met balusters. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een eenvoudige geprofileerde bakgoot en bekroond met een tympaan, dat versierd is met loofwerk en rust op een met cassetten versierde architraaf. De vleugels hebben hoekpilasters en lijstgoten, die boven de toegangen zijn uitgewerkt tot afdaken, elk rustend op een gietijzeren zuil. De tuin wordt omzoomd door een deels gesmeed, deels gietijzeren hekwerk.

DOUBLE MANSION HOUSE, situated free-standing to the south of the southern railway depot on a triangular plot bordered by fencing, located at the intersection of Viaductstraat and Driehovenstraat, built in 1882 on behalf of R. Roelfsema to the design of Groningen architect N.W. Lit in a richly decorated, eclectic architectural style. The building was renovated in 1986 and currently contains various residential units. The interior is of subordinate importance due to alterations.
Description
The broad, symmetrically arranged building is constructed on a shallow, regular ground plan and consists of a central risalit of two storeys and four bays wide and two corner risalits of one storey and three bays wide. The three building sections are covered with truncated hipped roofs and covered with black new Dutch tiles (originally black Frisian corrugated tiles). All facades are white-plastered and on the ground floor provided with false joints. The front facade of the central risalit is articulated by stucco pilasters with fluting, mirror panels and composite capitals. All windows on the ground floor are lightly arched and have profiled stucco mouldings with cornices and keystones. The storey windows are semicircularly closed; the spandrels are decorated with stucco leafwork and garlands. In front of the two central windows a false parapet with balusters. The facade is finished with a simple profiled gutter and crowned with a tympanum, decorated with leafwork and resting on an architrave decorated with cassettes. The wings have corner pilasters and cornice mouldings, which above the entrances are worked out as canopies, each resting on a cast iron column. The garden is bordered by partly wrought, partly cast iron fencing.

Double mansion house, constructed in a richly decorated eclectic architectural style - typical of the last quarter of the 19th century - to the design of Groningen architect N.W. Lit, of general importance from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical point of view as an intact example of the characteristic villa architecture, realised on the southern fortification works of the city of Groningen, which were demolished at the end of the nineteenth century.
