Inleiding
IJSKELDER van een zeldzaam eivormig type, gebouwd omstreeks 1895 in opdracht van het Ministerie van Justitie ten behoeve van het Hospitaal "Vertrouw op God". Het ontwerp is vermoedelijk van W.C. Metzelaar.
Omschrijving
Sober en functioneel uit baksteen opgetrokken koepelvormig object, dat aan de buitenkant is gepleisterd (deels verdwenen) en oorspronkelijk geheel door een dikke laag turf (60 cm) was afgedekt. De wanden van de koepel varieren van 33 cm aan de bovenzijde tot ongeveer 1 m aan de onderzijde. Op de koepel, die toegankelijk was via een trap en een inmiddels dichtgemetseld luik, bevinden zich twee gemetselde uitstulpingen die vermoedelijk dienden als bevestigingspunt voor een houten platform met leuningen. Zeven grote bomen boden de ijskelder extra schaduw.

A sober and functional dome-shaped object constructed of brick, rendered on the outside (partly lost) and originally entirely covered by a thick layer of peat (60 cm). The walls of the dome vary from 33 cm at the top to approximately 1 m at the bottom. On the dome, which was accessible via a staircase and a since-sealed hatch, there are two brick protrusions that presumably served as attachment points for a wooden platform with railings. Seven large trees provided the ice cellar with additional shade.
