Inleiding.
Twee tussen het Stationsplein en de Parallelweg gesitueerde ijzeren perronoverkappingen naar ontwerp van ir. G.W. van Heukelom in 1896 gebouwd door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Machinefabriek v/h E.H. Begemann te Helmond.
Omschrijving kap 1e perron.
De kap bestaat uit twee lage gedeelten met in het midden de hoge kap. De totale lengte is ca 500 m en de breedte van de hoge kap is ca 15 m; de lage kappen hebben de halve breedte. Aan de noordzijde is de lage kap gedeeltelijke verdubbeld; de ijzerconstructie kan worden gekarakteriseerd als vakwerkknieboogspanten met omgebogen onderrand, geplaatst op gietijzeren scharnierende basementen, met in de lengte van de kap vakwerkliggers, waarvan de uiteinden in hoogte toenemen; de hoge kap rust op dubbele gekoppelde vakwerkknieboogspanten; de luifels zijn aan beide zijden aangebracht en rusten op vakwerkconsoles.
Omschrijving kap 2e perron.
De ongeveer 450 m lange en 15 meter en brede overkapping is opgebouwd uit vakwerk- knieboogspanten met gebogen onderrand, die geplaatst zijn op gietijzeren scharnierende basementen; de kap rust op vakwerkliggers die als gordingen zijn aangebracht; aan de kap luifels op vakwerkconsoles; in het midden hoog gedeelte op dubbele gekoppelde vakwerk- knieboogspanten met glaswanden naar de sporen, en bij de overgang van de hoge naar de lage kap; langs de met hout gedekte kap en luifels is een lambrekijn aangebracht en op het uiteinde van de kap een palmet.
Waardering.
De ijzerconstructie van de overkappingen is kenmerkend voor de tijd van ontstaan, verkeert in vrijwel authentieke staat en is als perron-overkapping in deze vorm - knieboogspant onder boogkap met een hoog en een laag gedeelte - representatief en karakteristiek voor de ontwikkelingen in de stationskap- en overspanningsconstructies; in Nederland is een dergelijke overkapping zeldzaam in de spoorweg-architectuur, in het oeuvre van ir. Van Heukelom is deze overkapping uniek te noemen.
De ijzeren perronoverkappingen zijn op grond van de voor die tijd kenmerkende constructiewijze en oorspronkelijke vormgeving van architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde, alsmede van belang als evident monument van jongere bouwkunst wegens de zeldzaamheidswaarde in de 19e-eeuwse spoorweg-architectuur en uniciteitswaarde in het oeuvre van de ontwerper.

The canopy consists of two low sections with the high canopy in the middle. The total length is approximately 500 m and the width of the high canopy is approximately 15 m; the low canopies have half that width. On the north side the low canopy is partially doubled; the iron construction can be characterised as lattice knee-brace frames with curved underside, placed on cast-iron hinged bases, with lattice girders running along the length of the canopy, the ends of which increase in height; the high canopy rests on double coupled lattice knee-brace frames; the eaves are applied on both sides and rest on lattice consoles.
Description of canopy 2nd platform.
The approximately 450 m long and 15 metre wide canopy is built up from lattice knee-brace frames with curved underside, which are placed on cast-iron hinged bases; the canopy rests on lattice girders arranged as purlins; eaves on the canopy on lattice consoles; in the middle high section on double coupled lattice knee-brace frames with glass walls facing the tracks, and at the transition from the high to the low canopy; along the timber-covered canopy and eaves a lambrequin is applied and on the end of the canopy a palmette.
Valuation.
The iron construction of the canopies is characteristic of the period of origin, is in virtually authentic condition and as a platform canopy in this form - knee-brace frame under arched canopy with a high and a low section - is representative and characteristic of developments in station canopy and spanning constructions; in the Netherlands such a canopy is rare in railway architecture, in the work of ir. Van Heukelom this canopy is to be called unique.
The iron platform canopies are of architectural and cultural-historical value on the basis of the construction method and original design characteristic of the period, and are additionally of significance as evident monument of modern construction by reason of their rarity value in 19th-century railway architecture and unique value in the oeuvre of the designer.
