Inleiding
Het in een eclectische stijl gebouwde WOONHUIS dateert volgens een gevelsteen in de portiek, waarop ook de naam J.W. Smidt staat vermeld, van 1870. Het vrijstaande huis is bekend als 'De Oude Pastorie' en heeft mogelijk ook dienst gedaan als pastorie van de enkele decennia oudere Jozefkerk. Het pand is een van de huizen in een gebied dat in Assen bekend stond als de "paleizenbuurt" . De bescherming van het huis geldt voor de negentiende eeuwse hoofdvorm.
Omschrijving.
Het vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond (hoofdvorm) opgetrokken huis heeft een verdieping onder met geglazuurde Friese pannen gedekt, afgeknot schilddak met schoorsteenschachten op drie van de vier nokhoeken en een grote, in 1915 opgemetselde dakkapel (arkeneel) in het voorste dakschild. Het huis heeft gepleisterde gevels met schijnvoegen. De gevels zijn voorzien van een grijze plint met ronde, gietijzeren ontluchtingsroosters, hoeklisenen met casementen, een een travee breed middenrisaliet, met persiennes behangen zesruits schuifvensters met doorgetrokken rechte onderdorpels en afgeronde bovenhoeken binnen een profiellijst met kuif en een gevelbeeindiging in de vorm van geprofileerde gietijzeren dakgoten. De vijf-assige voorgevel is symmetrisch met in het risaliet een ingangspartij met een portiek dat wordt afgesloten door een met kuif bekroonde, vlakke, liggende ellipsboog. De paneel-vleugeldeur staat onder een bewerkt kalf en een bovenlicht met gietijzeren levensboom. Aan weerszijden van de entree is een gevellantaarn met gietijzeren arm aan de muur bevestigd. Het in het midden van het dakschild geplaatste arkeneel heeft een plat dak en een dubbel venster onder segmentboog. De linker zijgevel met kelderraam in koekoek is op de begane grond voorzien van twee vensters met kuif op de profiellijst als in de voorgevel. Het venster op de verdieping is wel voorzien van persiennes, maar mist de omlijsting. In de achtergevel staan verdiepingsvensters die gelijk zijn aan het venster op de verdieping in de linker zijgevel. Op het dak van een in 1937 toegevoegde aanbouw met plat dak komt een porte brisée uit. De rechter zijgevel is blind en is eveneens voorzien van ronde ventilatieopeningen in de plint.
Waardering
Het karakteristieke huis is van architectuurhistorische waarde als vrij gaaf voorbeeld van representatieve, in eclectische stijl gebouwde woonhuisarchitectuur. Het is een beeldbepalend pand dat staat in een deel van het beschermde stadsgezicht, waarin veel waardevolle laat negentiende eeuwse en vroeg twintigste eeuwse huizen zijn geconcentreerd. Description.
The house, erected from a rectangular floor plan (main form), has one storey under a hipped roof covered with glazed Frisian tiles, cut off at two opposite hips with chimney stacks at three of the four ridge corners and a large dormer (arkeneel) sealed in 1915 in the front roof slope. The house has plastered facades with ashlar lines. The facades are provided with a grey plinth with round, cast-iron ventilation grilles, corner pilasters with casements, and a one bay wide central projection with persienne-hung six-light sash windows with straight continuous sills and rounded upper corners within a moulded frame with cyma and a gable termination in the form of moulded cast-iron gutters. The five-bay front facade is symmetrical with in the projection an entrance section with a porch closed off by a flat, recumbent ellipse arch crowned with a cyma. The panelled and winged door stands under a worked lintel and a fanlight with cast-iron tree of life. On either side of the entrance is a wall lantern with cast-iron arm attached to the wall. The dormer placed in the middle of the roof slope has a flat roof and a double window under a segmental arch. The left side facade with basement window in cuckoo style is provided on the ground floor with two windows with cyma on the moulded frame as on the front facade. The window on the upper storey is provided with persiennes, but lacks the surround. In the rear facade stand upper storey windows which are the same as the window on the upper storey in the left side facade. On the roof of an extension with flat roof added in 1937 comes a porte brisée. The right side facade is blind and is likewise provided with round ventilation openings in the plinth.
Valuation
The characteristic house is of architectural historical value as a fairly intact example of representative residential architecture built in eclectic style. It is a prominent building that stands in part of the protected townscape, in which many valuable late nineteenth century and early twentieth century houses are concentrated. Therefore, its ensemble value is also great.
