Inleiding
Het PAROCHIEHUIS bij de Rooms-Katholieke kerk Maria ten Hemelopening is gebouwd in 1934-1935 naar een ontwerp van de Apeldoornse architect J. van Dongen. Hoewel het nogal sober is uitgevoerd heeft het rechts van de kerk staande pand de stilistische kenmerken van het aan de Delftse School verwante traditionalisme en sluit derhalve goed aan op de architectuur van het kerkgebouw, dat een jaar eerder door dezelfde architect is ontworpen.
Omschrijving.
Het pand is opgetrokken vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond, in gele baksteen met accenten van donkere, gesinterde baksteen. Het heeft een verdieping onder een uitkragend, met verbeterde Hollandse pannen gedekt, aan twee zijden geknikt schilddak met dakkapellen in de zijschilden en pironnen op de nokhoeken. De gevels zijn voorzien van rechtgesloten zesruitsvensters met (begane grond) en zonder bovenlicht (verdieping) en smalle penanten, alle met strekken en lekdorpels van geglazuurde tegels. De symmetrische voorgevel heeft een ingangsportaal onder met pannen gedekt uitkragend zadeldak. Het portaal heeft aan beide zijden gelede steunbeertjes en een rond venster met stalen kruisraam. De originele, met nagels beslagen lattendeur met ruitvormig raampje staat in een rondboogportiek en is gevat in een rondboogkozijn met een ingangsopening in de vorm van een afgeknotte keperboog. Het verdiepingsvenster boven de entree is kleiner dan de andere. De linker zijgevel heeft een symmetrische indeling en is in beide bouwlagen voorzien van twee maal drie vensters als in de voorgevel. Geheel linksachter in deze gevel bevindt zich de rechtgesloten entree van de bovenwoning. De deur staat in een minder hoog opgaand geveldeel, dat deel uitmaakt van een uitbouw aan de achterzijde, waarvan het overstek van het smalle dakschild over de entree kraagt. Het dakschild van de uitbouw loopt tot de hoogte van de dakrand en heeft een platte beëindiging. Het naar links uitgebouwde, verdiepingloze gedeelte staat eveneens onder plat dak. De linker zijde van de uitbouw is evenals de achtergevel van de hoofdvorm hier rechts van, voorzien van een rechtgesloten deur. De rechter zijgevel bevat naast de grotere vensters (als in de voorgevel) een aantal kleinere vensters op de begane grond in het achterste geveldeel.
Waardering
Het parochiehuis is een mooi en gaaf voorbeeld van traditionalistische interbellum architectuur en heeft derhalve architectuurhistorische waarde. Deze wordt versterkt door de aanwezigheid van het kerkgebouw, waarmee het karakteristieke huis een architectonische eenheid vormt. Hoewel het gebouw in wezen niet aansluit bij de overige, voornamelijk negentiende-eeuwse en vroeg twintigste-eeuwse bebouwing in de "paleizenbuurt" heeft het toch grote ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van een klein complex, waartoe ook de kerk en de voormalige pastorie behoren. Het parochiehuis maakt deel uit van het beschermde stadsgezicht.

The PARISH HOUSE belonging to the Roman Catholic church Maria ten Hemelopening was built in 1934-1935 according to a design by the Apeldoorn architect J. van Dongen. The building is constructed from a rectangular floor plan, in yellow brickwork with accents of dark, sintered brick. It has one storey beneath a projecting hipped roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles, bent on two sides with roof dormers in the side roofs and cresting tiles on the ridge corners. The facades are furnished with rectangular six-pane windows with (ground floor) and without fanlight (first floor) and narrow pilasters, all with lintels and drip mouldings of glazed tiles. The symmetrical front facade has an entrance portal beneath a projecting gabled roof covered with tiles. The portal has articulated buttresses on both sides and a round window with a steel cross window. The original lattice door studded with nails with a diamond-shaped pane stands in a round-arched porch and is set in a round-arched frame with an entrance opening in the form of a truncated herringbone arch. The first-floor window above the entrance is smaller than the others. The left side facade has a symmetrical layout and is furnished with three windows each in both storeys as in the front facade. Entirely in the back left of this facade is the rectangular entrance to the upper dwelling. The door stands in a lower-rising gable section, which forms part of an extension at the rear, from which the overhang of the narrow roof projects over the entrance. The roof of the extension rises to the height of the roof edge and has a flat termination. The section extending to the left, which is without storeys, also stands under a flat roof. The left side of the extension as well as the rear facade of the main structure here to the right, is furnished with a rectangular door. The right side facade contains, besides the larger windows (as in the front facade), a number of smaller windows on the ground floor in the rear gable section.
Valuation
The parish house is a fine and well-preserved example of traditionalist interwar architecture and therefore has architectural-historical value. This is reinforced by the presence of the church building, with which the characterful house forms an architectural unity. Although the building is essentially not aligned with the other, predominantly nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century buildings in the "palaces district", it nevertheless has great ensemble value as part of a small complex, to which also the church and the former rectory belong. The parish house forms part of the protected townscape.
