Inleiding
Vrijstaand, ca. 1880 in eclectische stijl gebouwd WOONHUIS. Dergelijke grote woonhuizen zijn representatief voor de woonhuisarchitectuur van de gegoede burgerij in die tijd. Het ten opzichte van de overige bebouwing terugstaande pand staat in een gedeelte van het beschermde stadsgezicht, dat in Assen bekend stond als de "paleizenbuurt". De aanbouwen vallen buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving.
Het vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken pand heeft een verdieping onder met geglazuurde platte Friese pannen gedekt, afgeknot schilddak met gepleisterde, overkapte schoorsteenschachten op alle vier nokhoeken. De wit geschilderde gevels zijn gepleisterd en verlevendigd met schijnvoegen, grijze plint, hoeklisenen met casementen en als gevelbeeindiging een grijs geschilderd entablement met op bewerkte klampen steunende geprofileerde gootlijst. De vijf traveeën brede voorgevel is symmetrisch met gevelopeningen die zijn voorzien van een profiellijst met schelpmotief in de kuif (als Beilerstraat 20), vlakke, doorgetrokken onderdorpels en een middenrisaliet. Hierin bevindt zich de entreepartij met een hardstenen stoep, paneel-vleugeldeur met stolpnaald onder een bewerkt kalf en bovenlicht. Hierboven staat een door plastisch versierde consoles gedragen balkon met smeedijzeren hekken tussen gietijzeren hoekbalusters, waarop een porte brisée met bovenlicht uitkomt. In de zijgevel bevindt zich op de verdieping een klein venster met glas-in-lood invulling binnen een profiellijst met kuif. De aanbouw met verdiepingloze toevoeging, nieuw ingangsportaal en verdieping onder plat dak maakt waarschijnlijk geen deel uit van de oorspronkelijke bouw. De achtergevel van de hoofdvorm is op de verdieping voorzien van zes-ruits schuifvensters met afgeronde bovenhoeken. De parterre is aan het oog onttrokken door moderne aanbouwen. De rechter zijgevel heeft twee rechtgesloten achtruitsvensters op de parterre en een venster met omlijsting als in de voorgevel op de verdieping.
Waardering
Het grote, karakteristieke huis is van architectuurhistorische waarde als een goed voorbeeld van in eclectische stijl gebouwde, representatieve woonhuisarchitectuur. Het beeldbepalende pand staat in een gedeelte van het beschermde stadsgezicht waarin veel laat negentiende en vroeg twintigste eeuwse woonhuizen voor de gegoede burgerij zijn geconcentreerd, waardoor de ensemblewaarde van het huis groot is.

Detached, circa 1880 built in eclectic style RESIDENTIAL HOUSE. Such large residential houses are representative of residential house architecture of the well-to-do bourgeoisie at that time. The property set back relative to the other building is located in a part of the protected townscape, which in Assen was known as the "palace quarter". The extensions fall outside the protection.
Description.
The property constructed from a rectangular ground plan has one storey covered with glazed flat Frisian tiles, truncated hipped roof with plastered, covered chimney shafts on all four ridge ends. The white-painted facades are plastered and enlivened with false joints, grey plinth, corner mouldings with casements and as facade termination a grey-painted entablature with profiled gutter moulding supported on worked clamps. The five-bay wide front facade is symmetrical with facade openings that are provided with a profile moulding with shell motif in the hood (as Beilerstraat 20), flat, continuous lower transoms and a middle risalit. Herein is located the entrance arrangement with a hardstone step, panel-wing door with stolp nail under a worked calf and fanlight. Above this stands a balcony supported by plastically decorated consoles with wrought-iron railings between cast-iron corner balusters, onto which a porte brisée with fanlight opens. In the side gable is located on the upper storey a small window with leaded glass infill within a profile moulding with hood. The extension with single-storeyed addition, new entrance portal and upper storey under flat roof probably does not form part of the original construction. The rear facade of the main form is on the upper storey provided with six-pane sash windows with rounded upper corners. The ground floor is concealed from view by modern extensions. The right side gable has two straight-enclosed rear-facing windows on the ground floor and a window with framing as in the front facade on the upper storey.
Valuation
The large, characteristic house is of architectural-historical value as a good example of built in eclectic style, representative residential house architecture. The image-determining property is located in a part of the protected townscape in which much late nineteenth and early twentieth century residential houses for the well-to-do bourgeoisie are concentrated, whereby the ensemble value of the house is considerable.
