Inleiding
WATERTOREN gebouwd 1914 in opdracht van de N.V. Maatschappij tot Bouw en Exploitatie van Gemeentebedrijven te Utrecht naar ontwerp van J.P. Hazeu. Aan de oostzijde, in het basement een gevelsteen met jaartal en de namen van J.W. van der Lely (burgemeester), P.H. Roos Ozn en J.H. van der Scheer (wethouders). De toren met eclectische stijlkenmerken is gebouwd op een markante plek op de voormalige vestingwallen en dicteert het stratenpatroon.
Omschrijving.
De watertoren is 32,3 meter hoog en heeft een ijzeren Intze 1- reservoir met een inhoud van 150 kubieke meter. Opbouw met een gepleisterd basement met schijnvoegen, afzaten boven de plint en een cordonlijst naar de schacht. De in metselwerk uitgevoerde verjongende schacht bevat smalle getoogde vensters met hanekam in rode verblendsteen. De overgang naar het reservoir wordt gemarkeerd door een rondlopend fries van gepleisterde boognissen met in elke windrichting een boogvenster. Het kwarthol uitkragende reservoir is opgebouwd uit elementen van gewapend beton en bevat langwerpige rechthoekige vensters. De toren wordt gedekt door een met zink gedekt tentdak met in de vier windrichtingen een frontonvormige dakkapel en een lantaarn met opengewerkte naald.
Waardering
De watertoren is van cultuurhistorisch belang als exponent van de ontwikkeling van het voorzieningen-niveau; van architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de specifieke functie en vormgeving alsmede vanwege de regionale zeldzaamheid en de hoge mate van gaafheid. Tevens is de watertoren van stedebouwkundig belang vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging en vanwege de markante ligging binnen het aan te wijzen beschermde stadsgezicht.

Introduction
WATER TOWER built 1914 on the instructions of the N.V. Maatschappij tot Bouw en Exploitatie van Gemeentebedrijven in Utrecht to the design of J.P. Hazeu. On the east side, in the basement a foundation stone with the date and the names of J.W. van der Lely (mayor), P.H. Roos Ozn and J.H. van der Scheer (aldermen). The tower with eclectic style features was built on a striking location on the former fortification walls and dictates the street pattern.
Description.
The water tower is 32.3 metres high and has an iron Intze 1 reservoir with a capacity of 150 cubic metres. Construction with a plastered basement with false joints, stepped brickwork above the plint and a cordon moulding towards the shaft. The tapering shaft executed in brickwork contains narrow arched windows with decorative coping in red facing brick. The transition to the reservoir is marked by a running frieze of plastered arches with in each cardinal direction an arched window. The quarter-round protruding reservoir is built up from reinforced concrete elements and contains elongated rectangular windows. The tower is covered by a zinc-clad tent roof with in the four cardinal directions a pediment-shaped dormer and a lantern with open-worked spire.
Valuation
The water tower is of cultural-historical importance as an exponent of the development of utilities provision; of architectural-historical importance because of the specific function and design as well as because of regional rarity and the high degree of integrity. Furthermore, the water tower is of urban-planning importance because of its image-determining location and because of its striking location within the townscape to be designated for protection.
