The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Detached prefabricated DWELLING, also known as 'Norwegian Villa', originally built in Emlichheim (Germany). In 1926 the house was relocated to Coevorden on the instructions of Willem Driessens (simultaneously with the relocation of Driessens' corrugated cardboard factory to Coevorden). The chalet-like dwelling was built on a striking location on the former fortification walls.

Description.

Wholescore wood construction dwelling erected on a concrete foundation with one storey and an upper floor under the high-rising roof structure. The foundation serves as a basement. Symmetrical in main form with a high-rising hipped roof and cross roof trusses with overhang placed on either side; covered with red old-Dutch tiles; asymmetrically placed chimney with double slope. Striking is the dark brown carefully finished wooden construction with stack construction and overhanging sections and the iron connecting elements which point to the prefabrication. The main facade has in the centre a wide rising wooden staircase to the veranda where also the double entrance door with side lights and sliding shutters are placed. The canopy of the veranda as well as the bay windows are supported by round wooden columns in the colours dark green, old red with simple decorations (notches) in white. Bay windows with 6-pane windows with rolling shutters and broad wooden frames. Above the bay windows are projecting stepped gables with three 6-pane windows separated by vertical members with rolling shutters (colours red, green). The generously overhanging roof has white wind-braces and a filling of the gable field with red and white wooden parts. The roof slope above the veranda makes a break for the upper storey windows. Flower boxes below the windows.

Valuation

The wooden dwelling is of cultural-historical importance mainly because of the typological and innovative aspect. Architectural-historical importance because of the development in building technique and the special use of materials, as well as because of the high degree of rarity and integrity. From an urban-planning perspective, the property is important as an essential component of the townscape to be protected.
