Inleiding

Introduction

The former STATE HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, founded in 1909-1910, was designed by state architect J. Vrijman, 'State Architect for educational buildings etc.'. The building, constructed in a very careful and craftsmanlike Transitional style, stands on an urban-planning determining location, on the former fortification wall and dictates the street pattern of the surrounding area. In 1916, 1920 and 1950-1951 extensions and alterations were carried out in the style of the original building. The 1950-1951 extension concerns the rear part of the attached cross wing. In the rear facade a portal has been installed with the date 1951 in the keystone. From 1926 to 1969 the State Teachers' Training College was also housed in this building. During the war the building was used by the Germans as a Kriegslazaret (military hospital). After the war the building regained its original function. From 1946 the school became known as Coevorder Lyceum, from 1968 as State Secondary School Complex. Between the former State HBS and the equally protected caretaker's residence at Churchilllaan 15 there is a strong architectural and functional relationship.

Description.

Composite building mass consisting of a front building with two perpendicular building volumes at the rear. All constructed in brick and covered by a roof clad with slate (Remognelei). The front building has two storeys, of which the right part has a lower roofline, and is covered by a hipped roof with some cross roof trusses; zinc hanging gutters. Characteristic are the dormer windows with hipped roofs clad with clay tiles and iron fittings as well as the composite chimneys in the rear roof slope. The facades are articulated by a brick plinth, drip mouldings below the windows, spaced brickwork above the windows; wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. Clear division per classroom with a coupled window, each with 9-pane fanlight; above this a segmental arch with decorative brickwork and keystones. On either side of the coupled window a single window with 9-pane fanlight and a smaller segmental arch. Two sections of the front facade project forward; stepped gable with wooden cladding; attic shutters with decorative hinges, 4-pane fanlight. Entrance with portal, use of hardstone and sandstone, terrazzo floor; cartouche resting on mascarons of St. Joiresteen (presumably originally with the name State Higher Secondary School; in 1993 the name State Teachers' Training College still faintly appears below the cartouche); arched double door with side and fanlight. To the right of the entrance a slightly lower section with director's offices provided with spacious T-windows with 15-pane fanlight. Upper storey with coupled windows with 12-pane fanlight which project above the gutterline and have a stepped gable with wooden cladding. Side and rear facades have comparable but less elaborate detailing. The rear of the front building contains among other things a large window of the stairwell with a simply decorated stained-glass window. Along the rear facade runs the corridor and the facades therefore contain smaller windows, all with original glazing bar divisions. The large cross volume is executed in a comparable style to the front building with classrooms on the east side and the corridor on the west side. The first part of this cross volume is the 1916 or 1920 extension. The rear and broader part concerns the 1950-1951 extension.

The INTERIOR has been partially adapted. What is important is the original main layout with corridors (terrazzo) at the rear and classrooms at the front. Also important are the original stairwell of the central hall, executed in hardstone, with sober decorative ironwork and balustrade as well as the stained-glass window and the original draught-proof portal at the main entrance.

Valuation

School building of cultural-historical importance, given the important role of Coevorden as a regional educational centre and typical of the development of education; of architectural importance because of the stylistically careful design, typical of state architect architecture, and important because of the particular integrity of the exterior. Of urban-planning importance because of the image-determining location and its significance within the townscape to be protected.
