Inleiding.
Herenhuis in eclectische trant, gebouwd in het derde kwart van de negentiende eeuw. Het pand vormt onderdeel van de reeks aaneengesloten nagenoeg identieke huizen Mauritskade 43 t/m 57, waarvan de buitenste panden aan beide zijden als risalieten zijn opgevat. Het is het geboortehuis van de schrijver Louis Couperus (1863-1923). Omschrijving.
Pand op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit lage parterre, beletage, verdieping en lage kapverdieping in het met zink belegde zadeldak, drie vensterassen breed waarvan de rechter de ingang bevat. Boven de met hardsteen beklede plint is de parterre van een geblokte bepleistering voorzien. De gevel is verder als schoon-werk uitgevoerd, met uitzondering van de lage kapverdieping die gepleisterd is. De vensters bezitten flauw getoogde, geprofileerde houten omlijstingen met kuifstukken van stucwerk; alleen het middelste venster van de beletage draagt een kroonlijst met versierde voluutconsoles. Voor dit venster bevindt zich een balkon met balustrade, gedragen door consoles. De verdiepingen worden gescheiden door geprofileerde waterlijsten. De lage zolderverdieping wordt verlicht door liggende vensters, waartussen versierde voluutconsoles die de van modillons voorziene houten kroonlijst dragen. De vensters bezitten gietijzeren raamhekjes en stolpramen. De oorspronkelijke parterrevensters zijn door bredere ramen vervangen; ook de deur is vernieuwd. The facade is otherwise executed as fair-faced work, with the exception of the low attic storey which is rendered. The windows have slightly arched, profiled wooden surrounds with stucco hood moulds; only the central window of the bel étage bears a cornice with decorated scroll consoles. Before this window is a balcony with balustrade, supported by consoles. The storeys are separated by profiled drip mouldings. The low attic storey is lit by horizontal windows, between which decorated scroll consoles carry the wooden cornice furnished with modillions. The windows have cast-iron window guards and sash windows. The original ground floor windows have been replaced by wider windows; the door has also been renewed.
