Exterior description and setting

A rectangular gabled hall with a lateral gabled wing to the rear extending to each side. It stands in a detached position set back slightly from the road, between houses and the grounds of a school. Main entrance faces east, centrally placed in blank gable finished in white painted roughcast with half timbering black painted to apex; buttresses to extremities. Front door panelled original, with twin mullioned fanlight above, set in semi-circular opening with projecting drip moulding on brackets. Concrete steps original; handrails and exterior lights new additions. South elevation of main hall had four openings between buttresses and gable of later return to rear. Openings comprise segmental arched windows containing new frames of PVC with transom and two mullions presumably to original pattern, easternmost window now incorporating a new side door reached by new concrete steps with handrails.
Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses surmounted by ventilator with ogee cupola and finial, all original.

West elevation: four windows wide of extremely plain character with PVC windows.

North elevation of similar character to south. Rain water goods of light gauge metal, not original. Paving around building new, of concrete flags.

Front boundary wall cement rendered with concrete copings, not original. Gate piers roughcast with hemispherical caps, original, but gates new in galvanised steel.

Historical information

Original building erected in 1931, according to date inscribed on building; rear wing added in 1990s.

Evaluation

A nicely proportioned building in a vernacular revival style that is appropriate to its village setting but whose original character has now been diminished by its recent renovation using inappropriate materials.
