Exterior description and setting

A single storey gabled roughcast house with an empty bellcote on one gable.

The main entrance is in the side of a later porch projecting from the east elevation. Three windows to left of porch, one to right. Windows timber casements with central mullion below top-hung vent-light, not original; cills stone, painted black. Walls roughcast, painted white, possibly 20th century replacement finish. Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses. Two chimneys, rendered, one on west gable with 19th century pot; one level with porch with plain pot, not original. Arched bellcote minus bell, rendered, on east gable. Rainwater goods a mixture of cast iron originals and plastic replacements. Porch gable window similar to main front but set in semi-circular recess. Door rectangular glazed, of 20th century date.

Rear elevation of similar character, with one window as previous, but three with recent painted timber frames with top-hung vent over fixed light. Recent projecting gabled kitchen extension with large rectangular west window.

It stands within the village, on a corner site, set back behind a small front garden and facing onto the road junction which forms the centre of the village.

Historical information

Erected in 1825 as a school by R.W. Johnston; originally established under the Kildare Place Society, it was placed under the control of the National Board in 1833; presumably ceased to be a school when the new one was built nearby in the early 1930s; kitchen added to rear c 1987.

Evaluation

This is a building of some local historical interest as well as one whose bellcote provides a quaint feature on the main road, but is of no special architectural interest apart from that one feature.
