House - 17th century

On a S-facing slope in undulating terrain. The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes 'a thatcht house with a chemny & some cabyns' in Killmologe which was owned by 'Edmond Prendergast of NewCastle Esqr. Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 318). On both the 1st (1840) and revised (1904-5) ed. OS 6-inch map this house is named 'Kilmaloge Old Ho.', suggesting it is at least 18th century, and possibly late 17th century in date. It consists of a disused house in a bad state of repair, the front facing E. Five-bay, T-plan house (front facade c. 13.5m L; wall 0.59m T) with infill extensions giving a block plan, also additions to N and S gables of main house. The house is built of limestone rubble, roughly coursed. It has poor quoins, crudely cut and stone coping. The present slate roof is lower than the original gable line and it has a corbelled brick eaves course. All the embrasures at the front have brick surrounds and are segmental, except a large window over the doorway which is round-headed. The main entrance has been broken through and a large, flat-headed entrance inserted, there is a brick segmental relieving arch still visible with a stone relieving arch above this. The exterior was rendered. There is a large internally projecting chimney on the S gable, a mixture of stone and brick, there was a corresponding chimney on the N gable but this has collapsed internally. The main block is one room deep and has been altered internally to provide housing for cattle. In the T-projection there is a brick blocked up oculus above the window in the rear wall. In the gable closest to the railway track there is a blocked up occulus on either side of the chimney at attic level.
