The National Monuments Service's description
On a scrub-covered terrace at the base of a vertical rock face on the lower NW slopes of Knockanes ridge, in the Burren National Park. Listed as fulachta fia in the RMP (1996); a cluster of fulachtaí fia in the area was reported by Tom Coffey (1994) on annotated maps (SMR file). A substantial C-shaped mound (c. 17m E−W; c. 9m N−S to rock face; H 0.8m at NE; 2m at W) with a long, deep central hollow (c. 9m E−W; 2-3m N−S) open towards the rock face at S. The terminals of the ‘arms’ of the mound abut the rock face so that the trough hollow is enclosed by the mound on its N arc and by the straight rock face at S. Large boulders/rock outcrop are incorporated into the edge at NW. The mound is composed of a dense concentration of heat-shattered limestone fragments in a matrix of dark grey soil. No water is evident within the area of the trough hollow but a spring now issues from the base of the rock face 7m to E of the fulacht fia. Another fulacht fia (CL010-143004-) lies 15m to the W on the same terrace and two fulachtaí fia (CL010-143001- and CL010-143002-) are c. 200m and 250m to SW on a lower terrace.
