Historique

History
For the history of the fortifications, see notice PA00091585. The bastion of Papegaut derives its name from a privilege - the right of papegaut - granted by Henri III to the bourgeois militias of Blavet to train in arquebus shooting. It belongs to the urban enclosure constructed between 1649 and 1653. At the south-east extremity, it allowed surveillance of Loc Malo bay and the Gâvres peninsula. In 1706, a battery was installed there, commanded by François de Lavl-Montmorency, but at the end of the 18th century, Louis Lazare d'Ajot considered the place too reduced. In 1878, Henri Coville arranged the site for the installation of a battery with earth entrenchments and casemates. The bastion was uncrowned, the ramparts lowered to the east of the tour Saint-François. The bastion is half buried in a turfed slope and only partially survives, encircled by walls of the 17th century, lowered on the waterfront in the 19th century and extended northward in 1878.
