History
The city of La Rochelle knew several successive fortified enclosures until the 18th century. The Maubec gate corresponds to the period of Protestant construction (between 1590 and 1610) and was completed at the beginning of the 17th century. It survives the destructions following the siege of 1627-1628 and the construction of a new enclosure from 1689 onwards. During the 18th century, it is used for private purposes, before serving as a warehouse for the Saint-Louis hospital in the 19th century.
