History
The guard posts, watch posts built for the surveillance of the coasts, depended on captaincies of a thousand men organised in 1705 all along the coast of Normandy. The coasts of the English Channel comprised thirteen captaincies and seventy guard posts. The captaincies were suppressed in 1778.
