Pour renforcer le château, il fit construire une nouvelle enceinte qui présentait, du côté sud, des saillants constitués par de solides bastions casematés. Les côtés nord-ouest furent ensuite dotés de bastions semblables, analogues à ceux qu'employa Vauban. A l'angle de ces saillants furent construites des échauguettes en pierre de taille, couvertes à l'aide de calottes sphériques.

History
Example of 16th-century military architecture, built on the orders of the Duke of Épernon following an assassination attempt of which he was a victim. To strengthen the château, he had a new enclosure built which presented, on the south side, salient angles formed by solid casemented bastions. The north-west sides were subsequently provided with similar bastions, analogous to those employed by Vauban. At the angle of these salients were built échauguettes in ashlar, covered with spherical domes.
