Historique
En 1576, la ville de Clermont décida de posséder un collège distinct de celui du chapitre et choisit pour cela l'emplacement actuel, voisin du couvent des Carmes. La construction des bâtiments actuels fut entreprise en 1675 sous la direction d'un père architecte, Jean Cheneau. A l'expulsion de l'ordre, en 1762, l'enseignement fut confié à des prêtres. L'établissement devint "institut" en 1791 puis "école centrale" en 1796. Promu "lycée impérial" en 1808, puis "collège royal" en 1815. £L'ensemble des bâtiments aux façades grises forme un quadrilatère entourant une cour intérieure. A l'intérieur, le bâtiment sud conserve deux escaliers qui, par leurs rampes de pierre aux massifs balustres quadrangulaires, demeurent dans la tradition de la première moitié du 17e siècle.

History
In 1576, the town of Clermont decided to have a college distinct from that of the chapter and chose for this the present location, neighbouring the convent of the Carmes. The construction of the present buildings was undertaken in 1675 under the direction of a father architect, Jean Cheneau. At the expulsion of the order, in 1762, teaching was entrusted to priests. The establishment became an "institute" in 1791 then "école centrale" in 1796. Promoted "lycée impérial" in 1808, then "collège royal" in 1815. The whole of the buildings with grey façades forms a quadrilateral surrounding an interior courtyard. Inside, the southern building preserves two staircases which, by their stone ramps with quadrangular baluster masses, remain in the tradition of the first half of the 17th century.
