The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Alppilan kirkko on arkkitehtuuriltaan ja tilaratkaisuiltaan edustava esimerkki työväestön ja työläiskaupunginosan tarpeisiin suunnitellusta kirkkorakennuksesta, joka alun alkaen on tunnettu Kotkankadun seurakunnallisen työkeskuksen nimellä. Alueen asukkaiden kokoontumis- ja harrastustarpeisiin laadittu kirkon tilaohjelma on toteutettu korkeatasoisen arkkitehtuurin keinoin.

Valkoiseksi maalattu tiilinen, kaupunkirakenteeseen sovitettu rakennuskompleksi on neljän kadun rajoittamassa korttelissa. Kirkon pääsisäänkäynnin tunnuksena on päädyn kookas risti. Kirkonkellot ovat viereisen seurakuntasalin julkisivussa olevan pystysäleikön takana. Erillinen sisääntulohalli kokoaa tilat ja johtaa myös toisen kerroksen tasalla olevalle sisäpihalle, josta on käynti kirkkoon.

Suorakaiteen muotoinen kirkkosali saa valoa kuorin sivussa olevasta pystyikkunasta ja sisäkaton yläreunassa kulkevasta ikkunanauhasta. Sivuseinien pintamateriaalina on erikoisvalmisteiset pyöröpintaiset muototiilet, joilla lienee akustistakin merkitystä suhteellisen karun kirkkotilan pehmentäjinä. Sileäksi muuratulla alttariseinällä on tiilireliefiä käytetty kookkaan ristin taustasommittelussa. Seurakuntasali on liitettävissä tilaan pystysuunnassa liikuteltavan betoniseinämän avulla.

Alppilan vasta perustetun seurakunnan kirkko valmistui 1957.

Alppila Church is an architecturally and spatially representative example of a church building designed to meet the needs of the working population and a working-class district, which was originally known as the Kotkankatu parish work centre. The church's spatial programme, drawn up to meet the residents' needs for gatherings and hobbies, has been realised by means of high-quality architecture.

The white-painted brick building complex, fitted into the urban fabric, occupies a block bounded by four streets. The main entrance of the church is marked by a large cross on the gable. The church bells are behind the vertical louvre in the facade of the adjacent parish hall. A separate entrance hall gathers the spaces together and also leads to the inner courtyard at the level of the second floor, from which there is access to the church.

The rectangular nave receives light from a vertical window at the side of the chancel and from a band of windows running along the top of the interior ceiling. The side walls are finished with specially made round-faced profiled bricks, which presumably also have an acoustic significance as softeners of the relatively austere church interior. On the altar wall, which is built smooth, brick relief has been used in the background composition of a large cross. The parish hall can be joined to the space by means of a concrete wall that moves vertically.

The church of the newly founded Alppila parish was completed in 1957. Construction was carried out according to a proposal by architects Keijo Ström and Olavi Tuomisto, which had won the general architectural competition held in 1953.

In addition to parish premises, a nave, a parish hall, a service chapel and the parish office, the church building also included a gymnasium, 15 club rooms and eight apartments. The church was to serve, alongside its function as a place of worship, also as a shared meeting and hobby venue for the area's residents.
