How to Export a GEDCOM File from RootsMagic

RootsMagic is a powerful desktop genealogy application with a simple export process. You can have a GEDCOM file ready in under a minute. Upload it to TreeAlive to watch your ancestors' migrations unfold across an animated historical map.

Step-by-step instructions

Open RootsMagic
Launch RootsMagic on your computer and open the family tree file you want to export.

Open the File menu
Click "File" in the menu bar at the top.

Select Export
Click "Export…" from the menu.

Choose GEDCOM format
Select "GEDCOM File" as the export type and click "Next."

Select people to include
Choose "Everyone" to include all individuals in your tree, or use the filter options to select specific branches.

Save the file
Choose a file name and location on your computer, then click "Save" or "Export." RootsMagic will create the .ged file.
Tip
RootsMagic can also sync with FamilySearch and Ancestry. If you've been syncing, make sure to pull the latest changes before exporting for the most complete data.
