GEDCOM Export Guides

Simple instructions for downloading your family tree from any major genealogy platform.

What is a GEDCOM file?

GEDCOM (GEnealogical Data COMmunication) is the universal file format for family trees. It's a simple text file with a .ged extension that contains your ancestors' names, dates, places, and relationships.

Every major genealogy platform can export a GEDCOM file. Once you have one, you can upload it to TreeAlive to watch your ancestors' migrations come alive on an animated historical map — completely free.
