Crow Wing Agency
The Chippewa Indian Agency was established about 1 mile south of here in August 1852, together with a government farm and a mission school. It was threatened with attack in 1862, but troops from Fort Ripley averted disaster. When the White Earth Reservation was created by the Treaty of 1867 this agency was abandoned.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
