St. Columba Mission
In 1852 the Reverend James L. Breck, Episcopal missionary, opened a mission and school for the Chippewa on the shore of Gull Lake just west of this point. The establishment flourished for several years, but the increasing hostility of the Indians, culminating in the threatened Chippewa Outbreak of 1862 forced its abandonment.
Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
