On August 17, 1862 four young Sioux braves on a dare visited the Robinson Jones and Howard Baker cabins, then standing just west of here, and after a friendly shooting match killed five persons. These murders precipitated the bloody Sioux Outbreak of 1862. A State monument marks the site of the massacre.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
