Early in 1863 Company H., Tenth Minnesota, built a timber stockade about the hotel and store near this site, and garrisoned it as one of the frontier chain erected during the Sioux Outbreak. Several whites were killed by Indians in the vicinity during 1864. This town site was virtually abandoned late in the eighties.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
