You are traveling through Schitsu’umshu’lmkhw, the traditional homelands of the Schitsu’umsh (Coeur d’Alene Tribe). Schitsu’umshu’lmkhw spanned from eastern Washington, across Idaho’s panhandle, to western Montana. In 1873, President Ulysses Grant created the Coeur d’Alene Reservation. Smaller than the Tribe’s ancestral lands, it was still huge. The discovery of gold in the Silver Valley brought widespread trespassing onto the reservation. In the 1880s, Congress opened hundreds of square miles of formerly reserved lands to white settlement, shrinking the reservation to its current size. Schitsu’umsh still hunt the forests, travel the rivers, and camp on land that has been theirs since time immemorial.
