25th Infantry Regiment

In 1910, President William Taft ordered soldiers to fight fires then raging through the Northern West. The 25th Infantry, a regiment of Black troops, went into action. In Wallace, the 25th maintained order as flames descended on the town, then evacuated women and children on outbound trains. In Avery, the troops helped residents escape and lit backfires that saved the community. The regiment also built trails for fire crews and retrieved bodies from burned areas. “The soldiers of the 25th Infantry have done heroic service and saved many lives and much property,” reported the Seattle Times.
