Schitsu'umsh

The original people of this land call themselves Schitsu’umsh, “those who were found here.” French fur traders called them “Coeur d’Alene,” meaning “heart of the awl,” for their shrewd bartering skills—a name the Tribe also proudly recognizes. That keen business sense has carried on to the present. The Tribe is one of the region’s largest employers, involved in gaming, recreation, agriculture, and technology. The Schitsu’umsh of today are the sum of untold generations that have lived in this land of abundant beauty, rich in resources. They are who they always were and who they will always be.
