Long Bridges

Travel between Sagle and Sandpoint proved challenging to early residents. They could row. Or they could walk over the railroad trestle—a hike requiring nimble feet and a good knowledge of train schedules. In 1910, contractors sank 1,540 pilings to support a two-mile-long wagon bridge. Locals claimed it the longest wooden bridge in the world. A new automobile bridge replaced the wagon structure in the 1930s, and in the 1950s a concrete and steel span connected the two towns. That bridge remains, a popular walking and biking path that parallels the latest Long Bridge, completed in 1981.
