In 1809, David Thompson oversaw construction of the earliest fur-trading post in what became the American Pacific Northwest. Located 2 ½ miles from here, Kullyspel House (Thompson’s spelling for Kalispel) was the first structure built by non-Indians in Idaho. A geographer and surveyor of rare skill, Thompson explored and documented vast regions for the North West Company of Montreal. Reaching south from present-day British Columbia, he extended his company’s trade influence to north Idaho. Thompson first mapped the route that Idaho Highway 200 now follows. The North West Company abandoned Kullyspel House in 1811.
