Landlocked Idaho has contributed significantly to American submarine technology. During World War II, the Farragut Naval Training Station prepared nearly 300,000 sailors for duty. Following the war, the Navy retained a 25-acre parcel of the former training center for its Acoustic Research Detachment (ARD). As the nation’s fifth-deepest lake, Pend Oreille proved an ideal submarine testing environment. With a fleet of reduced-scale submarines, ARD undertakes trials here at a fraction of the expense of ocean research, aiding the Navy’s development of efficient, quiet submarines. The ARD’s Bayview base has supported nearly every major post-World War II submarine design.
