The Mirror Building (Site of Butterfield Stage Station)

In August 1858 the Butterfield Overland Mail Company took an option on this piece of property. On December 7, 1859, the property was formally acquired. A large brick building, containing offices and living quarters, was completed in 1860. The shops and stables were in the rear. With the exception of the station at El Paso, Texas, this was the largest and best equipped station on the entire route.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
