Merced Theater

The Merced Theater, erected in 1869 on North Main Street next to the Pico House, was the first theater in Los Angeles. It was built by William Abbott, a cabinetmaker, and named in honor of his wife, Mercedes García, an accomplished musician.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
