St. Helena Toll Road and Bull Trail

The old bull trail ran from Napa Valley to Middletown. It was built by volunteers in the 1850's. A number of the grades were 35 percent. It was an official road in 1861 and abandoned in 1868. St. Helena Toll Road also ran from same points. Was completed in 1868. The grades ran to 12 percent.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
