Lower Lake Stone Jail

This jail, claimed to be the smallest in the United States, was erected in 1876, of stone quarried locally and reinforced with iron. During the stirring days of the first quicksilver operations of the Sulphur Bank Mine lasting from 1873 to 1883, the need became apparent and led to its construction.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
