Sam Brannan Store, Calistoga

Sam Brannan arrived in Napa Valley in the early 1860's. He purchased a square mile of land at the foot of Mount St. Helena. This is the store he built, in which he made $50,000 in one year.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
