Historic gold-mining town founded by Drury D. Bailey, February 1870. Gold worth millions was being shipped out of Julian when it was found that fruits and staple cereals could be grown successfully and without irrigation. Julian apples are famous the country over.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
