Long ago, the Indian name for Santa Ysabel Valley was Elenaman. Father Mariner had visited the valley in 1795, a few years later it was explored by Fathers Pangeras and Sánchez. On Sunday, September 20, 1818, Father Martín, O.F.M., offered the first mass at Santa Ysabel. By 1822 Santa Ysabel was a well-established asistencia where there was a granary, several buildings, and a cemetery.
