Vallecito Stage Depot (Station)

A reconstruction (1934) of Vallecito Stage Station at the edge of the Great Colorado Desert. Original was built 1852. Important stop on first official transcontinental route, serving the San Diego-San Antonio ("Jackass") mail line (1857-1859), the Butterfield Overland Stage Line, and the southern emigrant caravans.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
